Thank you all. In addition to your solutions, the problematic DEM tif has been corrected in the server http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/digital-elevation-model-of-europe/ elevation1x1_new.zip is correct now (weird projection though: like 3035 but with lon_0=20)
