Awesome! Thanks everyone, after doing the following:
%sudo ppa-purge -d maverick ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

Seems QGIS fires up and the python modules load... don't know what's
not going to work now, but time to get starting learning QGIS anyway
;)
