Testing with OGR2OGR I have found the reason:
In the data part of my mif files the coordinates are spaced by tabs:
Data
POINT 717209 6169640
POINT 717026 6170109
POINT 717410 6169984
POINT 717455 6170016
If I change the tabs to blanks in a text editor then OGR2OGR and Qgis can
handle the MIF files like a charm!
I am pretty shure the MIF's are produced in MapInfo but if have not been
able to find a format specification telling how coordinates ought to be
spaced.
Then you should file a ticket for OGR :
