Hi Michele, this has always been an issue. I did it for the v.1.5 but there were some changes in the table of contents (legend) and it doesn't work anymore in recent versions.
So, if it somehow helps you, you can have a look at the "Load Them All" plug-in [1] with QGIS 1.5. You can get it installed from the QGIS repository.
