Answer (thanks to @Udjahorresnet on twitter):
QGIS does not provide an option to select .vtk in the 'save as type' dialogue
box when saving the .vtk file (the only option provided is 'all files').
Perhaps this could be resolved in future, but at present you need to manually
type in .vtk at the end of your chosen filename in order to ensure the file
appears as a .vtk in the directory and is visible to Paraview and VISit.
Thanks, hope this is useful to someone else.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Trying to vtk raster in GRASS
I am trying to vtk a raster in GRASS in QGIS, but every time I try it fails. It
I run it in QGIS it claims to have suceeded, but the file produced is not a vtk
and is not recognised by Paraview or VISit. If I run it in GRASS it just fails
completely, but neither program produces an error message or warming to
indicate what the problem might be. I was previously able to vtk a file, but
even if I try to vtk that file now, the process fails in the same way. Am I
likley to be missing some QGIS software component?
Thank you for your help.
Hannah
