The files with the monuments co-ordinates are exactly the same ones copied over by drag and paste there are no differences between the originals and copied. Two of the files work to don't. They show in the left hand column of the qgis window but nothing on the map itself.

(Returning the the maillist, maybe someone else will have ideas)

Does each of the shapefiles have a *.prj ? Maybe the monuments are in some different CRS? Try to right-click on the monuments and choose "Zoom to Layer".
Just reaching at straws here...

The files for the map, map contours and county outline are exactly as copied over and work fine.

So you have 4 sets of shapefiles on two different computers. All 4 display as expected on one computer, but when they are copied over to a different machine, one of the 4 does not display? And all the components of all 4 shapefiles are identical on both machines?
One machine is ubuntu, the other fedora 16, and both are running QGIS 1.7.4. If that sums it up, then indeed there are some gremlins at work here...

I meant to say 1.7.4, sorry. The same version of QGIS is on both machines.

Nothing deleted. I simply copied the files on to a usb tongle and then tried adding them to the 'new' project. Nothing changed or deleted.

The map files worked fine.

What do you mean by that? What works and what doesn't?
Can you compare the copied files to the originals? (file size at least)
(BTW, you can get QGIS 1.7.4 on Fedora 16 now. Version 1.4 is quite old. What were you using on Ubuntu?)

Ashley
You did copy over *all* components of the shapefile? At least you need to have *.shp, *.shx, *.dbf ...

Yes, Everything was copied over.

When I first tried it the files were re done. Then I redid everything again.

All the required files are there.   I had one set of data which I did myself using libreoffice which worked fine before and even that has the same thing.

Did you try to delete any rows in the dbf file using LibreOffice?
Do you still have the original shapefile that worked?
