This worked for me on Ubuntu 12.04:

Browse to http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#26-Ubuntu
and follow the instructions in section 2.6.2 With updated dependencies

It installed version 1.8.0-Lisboa

Has anyone had any luck with getting QGIS working on Ubuntu 12.04? I
have tried the stable and unstable versions and with not luck. I also
get the following:

"Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
qgis : Depends: qgis-providers (= 1.8.0-1~precise1) but 1.9.90

    Depends: qgis-common (= 1.8.0-1~precise1) but 1.9.90+git20120502
