Just hit the button and a additional file in the directory where your 
shapefiles are is created (*.qix). Panning and zooming should be much faster 
now.

actually i have not....i see the option, but how is this process done, and what 
occurrs as a result of creating a spatial index?  thanks for your response.

hi all,

i have loaded the entire shapefile of NYS streets from the clearing house and 
is much to large for qgis to smoothely run, so.....i am familiar with clipping, 
but am not sure how to slip out the section of dutchess county that i am 
interested in. can anyone help me do this?
