Brian - no this is not my job, like many people around here. Sorry I can't help you for the postgis error - hoefully someone else can step in. However, I wonder if using another repository (sharpie) for postgis could be the cause? Although I assume you need that to get latest postgis. Ubuntugis ships with 1.5.3-3~precise1
Sadly, sometime to have cutting-edge software you need to compile the whole stack (or at least qgis) yourself...
