I have not used it yet so I'm not sure, but I think the only way is to use the open standard formate SLD http://underdark.wordpress.com/2012/06/03/sld-support-and-other-qgis1-8-style-features/
There are also possible to make this in ArcGIS http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/3755/how-to-edit-or-convert-ar And also MapInfo can read and create SDL-files. How does it work to exange style defined layer files between MapInfo and ArcGIS? Even there may the use of SLD as layer style make it easier? If i'm not correct, pleas correct me.
