If you know the dimensions of the painting then georeferencing the image should not present problems. For example, if the painting is 200 cm wide by 100 cm high you could georeference the image using a coordinate of 0,0 for its bottom left-hand corner and 200,100 for its top right-hand corner. In the georeferencer use 'Helmert' and 'Linear' and set a CRS of (say) EPSG:3395. The CRS is not really important in your case, but you have to specify something. N.
