Hi Bjorn,
You can rotate your map in the composer only. First, add a map to your
layout. After selecting it you can edit the rotation value in the tab
"Item properties".
I don't know when this feature was added, but it has been in QGIS master
for a while.

use this feature quiet a lot in arcgis (data frame properties --
general -- rotation) to map especially elongated feature at a
resolution that otherwise won't fit on my screen and I assume that
there must be something equivalent in qgis that I have simply not noticed.
