I think it's a spatial index problem, because QGIS doesn't use MapInfo's
.ID file it has to load the complete table before displaying anything.
I've only had this problem with OS MasterMap (UK) data and worked round
it by saving the data as a shapefile, loading it into QGIS (which will
still take a long time at first), and creating a spatial index in QGIS.
After this it will load quickly. Another work around is loading the data
into SQL Server (QGIS2.0 can read sql server spatial indexes), I think
this approach will also work with PostGIS.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Very slow adding MapInfo tables
Message-ID: <[email protected]>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi,
I'm adding native MapInfo tables to a project in QGIS 2.0.1. Small
tables
are fine, but tables with around 2 million records take 20 minutes to
add!
Likewise opening the Attribute table takes a very long time.

One a large table has been added, the map performs well - panning and
zooming function really quickly.

Is there anything I can do to achieve acceptable loading times?

Cheers

Graham
