Hi there. I'm new to QGIS and I'm looking to mask the base layer I've added
to my composition. In ArcGIS this would be done by clipping one layer to
the extent or shape of another. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, it can be done the same way with QGIS, but the Openlayers plugin background is not a raster datasource, but comes in tiles.

I have described a simple way to mask tile backgrounds here:

<http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/73048/how-do-i-clip-osm-basemap-with-a-polygon>

Second choice would be to make a screen copy with Save as Image, and load that as raster. The screen copy is already georeferenced.

The print composer produces raster images as well, but they are not georeferenced.
