Hi

You could also download OSM data in Shapfile format, e.g. from Geofabrik
website :
http://www.geofabrik.de/data/shapefiles.html

Load the layers in QGIS, then style them, or get some available in some
shared repositories, e.g.
https://github.com/3liz/osm-in-qgis
You can then tune the styles (and contribute back if you want)
