yes, qgis 2.2 can open a 2.0 project.
Perhaps the problem was due to a particolar format ?
AFAIK, actually the only significative bug I know in 2.2 is that is not
allowed an angle more than 0-90 for a line-pattern fill.
Instead it is allowed in QGIS 2.0.
This bug is resolved in qgis-dev version (2.3.).
