Hi Andrea and Andreas,
Thanks for your reply.
I´m trying to show my students how to ask questions on the list – and get a
reply ☺.
Your answers will be a part of my lectures on Monday

AFAIKM something is availale in

style -> advanced -> size-scale-field -> scale area
or
style -> advanced -> size-scale-field -> scale diameter.

Hi Lene,

Without knowing how you specified the symbol size, my assumption is that
you used map units for the symbol size.

Unfortunately, with map units, there is no way to influence the way the
symbol scales in the print composer. This is a missing feature/limitation.

If you specified the symbol size in mm it would probably look ok in the
print composer legend.

I don't even know how one could solve this issue - a mapping between map
units and mm, solely for the scope of the printed legend or legend in
QGIS WMS server?
