Andreas,
Thank you again for this information on data driven symbols and
labelling. My current work around is to use rule based symbols. I
still need to create each symbol individually. The name of each rule
becomes the label in the legend and the symbol is displayed on the map
as required.
This process works but is time consuming when there are more than 50
points to label. I was hoping to automate the process however I will
continue as is for now.
I have been using QGIS exclusively since 2011 and it only gets better
with each new version. Although it will not yet create the legend I
want, I am very happy with the software.

Hi Les,
data-driven symbology and labeling is certainly possible. Look out for
these small icons next to each property widget where you can either
choose an attribute column or a QgsExpression (calculation). This works
for virtually any property. If something is missing, it could certainly
be added.
Regarding the legend, things are more complicated. If you use a lot of
data-driven symbology and labeling, generation of legends (both in the
layer tree and in print composer) will not work properly. In print
composer you can use a static legend as a workaround. You can draw the
legend yourself in a graphics package like Illustrator/Inkscape and
import the legend as SVG.
It is an open, not so easy to solve issue how to properly generate
dynamic legends based on data-defined symbology and labeling - to still
work fast enough - and do not destroy a print layout.
Ideas/comments/funding welcome ;-)

Andreas,
Thank you for your advice regarding dynamic labelling. I am able to
label my map similar to your example. In the legend I would like to
show a marker symbol with a short description. I would like the marker
to be data driven rather than create each marker individually. Can this
be done in QGIS 2.4 Chugiak?
Once again, thank you for your assistance.
Regards,
Les Searle
