Apologies to all.
We finally tracked the error down to bad shape files with the wrong date
format.

Hi Guys
I have a mac running mac osx maverics (10.9.5) and Qgis 2.4.
For some reason the date format on the mac is mis-interpreting the date
in shape files as being year day month format (YYYYDDMM) resulting in
incorrectly formatted dates.
It is correctly written in the shape file .dbf as YYYYMMDD (confirmed
with dbf viewer) and is interpreted correctly on multiple windows
machines. The date format on the mac is set to UK dd mm yyyy but we
swapped to US mm dd yyyy format as a test but the problem remained the same.
Any suggestions most welcome.
Regards
Jules
