The best database for a spatial infrastructure in the enterprise is the database system you presently use in the enterprise ... if you already have a database system in the enterprise and it supports spatial data. Otherwise Postgres/Postgis wins hands down. The - very small - general performance difference between Postgres and Oracle is easily overcome by investing in better hardware for PostgreSql using a small part of the money saved by *not* buying several very expensive Oracle licenses . And let the PostgreSql database server instance run on Linux.
