Why do you want to edit it outside of QGIS? That may well lead lead to
data corruption & personal unhappiness. Make a copy of the shapefile
set & open the .dbf in Excel & see what happens.
Why not delete the columns from the attribute table & copy the values
over using the Field Calculator? It's easy enough - with the data in
edit mode click on the red/white cross icon & select as many fields as
you want & delete. No harder than Excel (unless you haven't come across
this before).
Then select the features you want to "copy" attributes for (or select
none & all values will be reproduced).
Choose either "create new field" or "update existing" one (& choose
field from the drop-down list)
In the Function List, go to "Fields & Values" then double click on the
field you to copy the values from.
Ok this & the values will appear in the new or existing field you chose.
Job done & your data is safe.
