The windows standalone installers are self contained, but share preferences and 
registry settings. 

So they don't usually give problems, unless an incompatibility in settings or 
plugins (openlayers, is a prime example) between versions.

I haven't seen anything to suggest that having 2.6 and 2.8 is problematic. 

I will also point out that while 2.6 project files should work in 2.8, no 
attempt is made to make 2.8 project files work in 2.6.
