Hi, 
You can look at some basic statistics in the layers properties by right 
clicking on the layers.  Those are sometimes wrong.  Best to use the 
gdal raster statistics in the processing toolbox plugins or the grass module in 
the same toolbox. 
 The gdal module in the raster\ menu can sometimes give wrong results if the 
.XML file has been created. If you delete it, if will give you good 
results.  The XML file with the statistics is created if you open and 
close a layer for the first time.  Look in same directory as your raster 
to find and delete the file.  Depends on the version Qgis.   Bug 
may have been fixed.
