+1 for dumping the standalone installer and using (a simplyfied) advanced OSGEO4W-setup only, possibly offering more older versions for compatibility reasons. Noob Windows user tend to use the standalone installer and then run into path issues with older versions (just experienced that last week on a colleagues machine) which they are simply unable to resolve. Quote from my colleague: "Wouldn't it be better to resume with that project in ArcGIS? I fear that things will break and all work is lost"
Things don't work -> Open Source software is unreliable.

Linux users are much more used to hack around in the system (very steep learning curve, and actually most people would like to work on their machines and not hack them). Even me as a "seasoned" Linux USER I am unable at the moment to get GRASS running in the toolbox for 2.8 on Ubuntu, and installation instructions are for some reason so much condensed into a few lines in the documentation, with no troubleshooting section at all, that I can understand the Windows users despair.

About the "selfishness" of developers: Completely accepted. But maybe there is some way to break this a bit by bribing. There must be a way to get more money into "user driven" projects by crowd funding, which would also mean that someone also has to be paid to coordinate that.

Cheers
Bernd

The standalone is the same package as the osgeo4w one. Same layout same software.

+1 to the idea of dumping the standalone, I don't think it ads any

I fully agree with them.

                          people using windows should

actually try make the update on windows "smoother" (isnt
             it already

             nice with OSGEO4W?)

I run QGIS on
Win7+8 wit OSGeo4W and on Ubuntu. In my opinion, the
Windows solution is almost easier to handle that the
repos on Ubuntu. Thanks Jürgen and whoever else is
               involved!
I might even go
as far as say that it might be worth considering dumping
the stand-alone installer if it causes more issues than
               it's worth.
Best wishes, Anita
