Good solution. One thing I noticed though is that the action isn't immediately
visible in the identify window. This may have to do with the tree mode. Any way
to configure so that actions are always on a zero node of the tree?

This is possible if you use Actions in the Styling
Here is an example of one I prepared to open DXF's from within QGIS
(see image below)
[% "LOCATION" %]/[% "FORMAT" %]/[% "SCALE" %]/full/[% "MAP_NUMBER"
%].[% "FORMAT" %]
The Data is a Vector Tile Index for OSi DXF maps for the entire
country (Ireland), I use multiple fields to create the file
extension, as it easily allows me to edit the "LOCATION" Field, to
change drive locations for other departments. The values in the ""
are the Column Headers, so I have:
* "LOCATION" Root Folder Location (Eg...C:/Osi_Maps)
* "FORMAT" Data supplied in DXF and NTF (eg....DXF)
* "SCALE" 1:1000, 2500 & 5000 (eg.....1000)
* "MAP_NUMBER" OSi Index Number
* "FORMAT" again
The above string then constructs the Path to the Vector resulting
in for example
C:/Osi_Maps/DXF/1000/full/1000_a.dxf
Clear as Mud eh!!!

program that can handle that file?

pop up window, but the problem with is that it disappears to
the back, when you go to pan or zoom out, the option to have
it auto close would be nice, also to have them stay on top
until you close them or pan/zoom, this could allow you to
select one or two entity's for comparison or editing for
example. Upon panning or zooming they both close...does that
make sense?
