I think this was the intent of the QGIS Globe plugin
http://hub.qgis.org/wiki/quantum-gis/Globe_Plugin

Note Marble, Worldwind, and OSSIM are other possible tools.

Keep in mind once you zoom in far enough you've re-entered the 2D
projection world.
