Just found: 1. The expression is spelled $currfield, not $currentfield. It has been renamed from "%%", which is what is written in the current (2.8) user guide manual. I will create a bug report about the default action. 2. Actions may be run by right click on an attribute value in the attribute table or in the identify results panel.
