Just as a surprise follow-up, thank you for making this suggestion. I,
too, was having problems with the qgis print composer mangling maps that
had an Open Layers component. I installed the QuickMapServices plugin, as
you suggested, and re-rendered my layers accordingly. My problems
immediately went away. Thank you!

Moreover, as a bonus, the QuickMapServices OpenStreetMap layer now has
properties I can tweak, which Open Layers still lacks. (In this case, I
needed to dial up transparency, which I still cannot do from within qgis.)
So not only did using QuickMapServices resolve my problem, but also made
my work flow a little simpler, too.

Cheers,

Mark
