There seems to be a bug when attempting to record a point to a shape file, or spatialite file.
This occurs in QGIS versions 2.12, and 2.14. A line of data is added to the table, but no geometry is present. Recording of lines, and the use of tracking points for lines does not seem to be affected. This has been reported by several users on GIS Stackexchange. I have tested this on several computers with both external, and internal GPS/GPS/Glonass units, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1, and the results have been the same.
