Hi everyone, I am not sure if this issue was solved but QGIS has a rendering setting which allows allow using multiple CPU cores. I experienced those inexplicable crashes with QGIS 2.10 (Pisa). After I activated the setting Render layers in parallel using many CPU cores and put max cores at 8, everything was fine. The setting can be found in Settings/Options / Rendering.
So if you have multicore machine takes advantage of this. I hope this helps.
