Just tried, but to no avail (QGIS 3.2, OSGeo4W64, Windows 10) I renamed my profile, started QGIS, created an empty composer, drew a rectangle and tried to delete it with DEL – does not work, BACKSPACE does

Maybe, there are some local settings that interfere but on my side, documentation looks right.
