Well, I don't know about "best" solution - a lot of work installing Xcode and 
compiling everything, and if you have a retina Mac, you'll probably have a 
major slowdown:

That's the main tradeoff - I build with Qt 5.9, which has the small canvas 
problem (simple workaround), Homebrew uses Qt 5.11 with the retina slowdown 
problem (no workaround).
