Thanks - that did it.
There's something very fussy about the panel resizing. As the overall
dialog gets narrower, the left hand (menu) panel shrinks and even
disappears. If the dialog is not wide enough, you cannot expand the left
panel to show the labels.
(Or at least this is the case on Win 7).
