One good source might be https://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/ - the Space Shuttle Radar Topography Data.

If you're working in Canada you could check to see if the province has an open data portal with elevation data.

Good luck!

Hi Brock,

Perhaps the semi-automated "Raster Tracer" plugin could help?

See http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/raster_tracer/ , https://github.com/mkondratyev85/raster_tracer/ and a video demonstrating how to use it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3Mh4wpSEMM

I think you need a proper raster data source for it (RGB for now) and it probably wouldn't work on tiled raster, such as served by Base Maps. But there might be solutions to convert a tiled base map to a GeoTIFF file ...

Or you get to the source, like the USGS topo file, which should be available as Geotiff files.

Hope this helps a bit.

Andreas

Does anybody know if it is possible to extract the contour lines (say as a shapefile) from a windowed portion of ESRI Topo (as available on QuickMapServices)? I'm working on an minerals exploration project with very limited topo coverage, and would far prefer to use the ESRI contours.
