I not sure if it was a Microsoft grant or what not, But I can go into my states 
GIS Clearinghouse and get a building map shapefile,(US) if that help too. I 
think Mike may have alluded to this.

Note that Open Street Map data also includes building footprints, which might 
be a suitable alternative to google maps.

Does your license agreement with Google allow that?  I have always had
the impression that the normal terms did not, so if that's changed or if
I am confused that's very interesting.

(I'm also interested in answers to your question; in my area I have
imagery from the state government where that sort of use is clearly
permissible.)
