Andrew, Maybe what you need to do is Filter the data before editing, removing all but the data you are looking to edit. Another thing you can try in the Attribute Table is Show Features Visible On Map, I have not tried it but, you can set this as the default behaviour by going to Settings, Options, Data Sources and under Feature Attributes and Tables set the Attribute table behaviour to Show Features Visible on Map.
