"maximum" are available and can be used just like any programming language.

Anyway, once I discovered the marker attributes first and last vortex
the problem was solved.
AFAIK, that is an option for symbolising line layers (e.g. displaying a
marker only at first and last vertices) not for labelling only the first
and last point in a series of points.
