Yes, printing screenshots is sort of pointless. We can do that with just the
operating system. Niclas is right that the reason we want this is for
documentation purposes, and most of the information can be printed using just
text output. The main exception is the mindmap, and I checked PDFBox, and it
has a method to draw a raw image or JPEG. So, basically you can render the
prefuse component to a raw image, and then send that to PDFBox, and that should
be fine.
Also, make sure to use PDF features such as bookmarks, which will make it MUCH
easier to browse the PDF (e.g. you can find what you want just by clicking in
the bookmark outline).
