It looks like I need to cancel this release, due to Maven seemingly doing the wrong thing when one tries to release from a branch. Effectively, it first clones the repository, then tries to 'pull' the release tag instead of checking it out. (Well, at least that is the first problem I can't get around).
So, I will abort this release (sorry!), and instead invest my time in getting away from Maven. Gradle is what I have been eyeing for a while and the fact that Hibernate and Spring Security has moved, gives me enough confidence that it is capable enough. Also, these projects give enough of sample Gradle setup for me to get going.
