I'll check to see whether I was using -v or not.  I've sort of accepted 
the 53 second delay now.  I moved on to trying to build a kernel.  I 
mailed Richard the make output showing some errors and I'm supposed to 
be sending the .config file too but unfortunately I haven't even found 
time to switch the machine on since then - perhaps this weekend...
