A major issue. Most software is written to run under Windoze.Windoze has a myriad faults but it improves as it goes along and it tries to offer a complete integrated solution. What do you use that is so superior?Windows 95, 98, 2000 Linux Suse 64, 8.0
Windows 98 seems to cause the most problems. Windows because some of the software I wish to run is only available on Windows. I am a reluctant user.
We run Windows XP pro and Windows SBS2003 at work. We never reboot the server and just close down the workstations at night. As far as I can tell (and I give it a lot of hard use during the day) it is stable. My system here is W2K on the main desktop. I have run this for two years now and have only re-installed once, and that was because the hard drive failed.It is well known in the server world, run Windows and reboot every day, run Unix and reboot every several months if you were unlucky. Most ISP's run a flavour of Unix (which includes Linux) for reliability reasons.

Now IBM offer Linux virtual machines on their mainframes as a standard option. Sun and HP also offer it.
Ah, hardware. You would not believe the number of people who call us wanting to buy obsolete hardware because their flavour of LINUX does not support the current version. It may have a fast support system but it still lags a long way behind Windoze and it cannot cope with the speed of hardware innovation.. Don't forget I deal with many different companies every day including many that run under LINUX. I understand the problems they face.
The advantage of Linux is you can get a flavour which suits your need. Very reliable or latest easy to install, but you have to restrict your hardware to that which the Linux community or a few manufacturers have written the hardware. Linux probably has the fastest support for bugs of any operating system on the planet.
Linux is not actually successful. This is a myth perpetrated by those who want to believe it. Most system operate under Windoze. I am not saying it is not viable but, in the real world most systems run Windoze. Many things are available only for Windoze systems Many things do not work under LINUX.
Linux is so successful that manufacturers like IBM, HP & Sun support even though it is under the GPL license. Furthermore Apple have decided to adopt it as the base operating system of all Macs.
Yes and the reasons why it is a short sighted vision. You only talk of operating systems and not of software. This was what you were being so adamant about.
I hope this sums up the major operating systems available for the PC.
