There seems to be something I'm missing here.
What's wrong with reading the screen mode to see how many colours I can use?
If you get back 0, 4 or 8, then you know that you can't use higher colours.


And please don't tell me that you want to override whatever setting the user has set.

If, for example, I had Aurora set up to use only QL colour, I would NOT want any job to
try and set it to a different colour mode.!!!


The problem is probably that not everyone having SMSQ/e for the Aurora actually has Marcel's version... that means that SMSQ/e will report that the commands are there but once the program tries to access the new feature a big BOOM will ensue :-)

If you could reliably detect it however you can safely switch to Q-Word's native hardware mode (which works regardless of what you have)... IIRC Rich was checking also so he could create null (empty) mouse pointer to be replaced by our own pointer when running under QDOS or Minerva... Manually (forcibly :-) switching the MCR registers on the Aurora and then trying to use standard QDOS/PE calls has disastrous results on the screen although the machine is not harmed :-)
