It seems to me that we need Yet Another Version Of Qdos [YAVOQ] like we need an eighth hole in the head! What is the thinking behind it? Or is it just an expression of pure tribalism?

Hehe freeQDOS IS *NOT* QDos in the stricter terms... it uses the ideas behind QDOS/SMSQ/e however and since it's based on Minerva and QDOS Classic and it will run on QL style hardware (as well as Amigas and Ataris) the term "QDOS" in the "freeQDOS" seemed appropriate... It is first and foremost an exercise in OS technology. It doesn't aim to substitute SMSQ/e, QDOS or Minerva anyway :-)
It has Multibasic (Same as Minerva) but similarities end here (well not exactly here but close)...
It's in a sense everything I wanted QDOS to be and never became for one or another reason...
The planned facilities are too long of a list to cover here (check the website soon to be announced here after the first *working* alpha is available) and as I said... without software even mentioning it is pointless

If there's interest I can reply privately (and there is a freeQDOS mailing list setup) but that is purely academic and for playing around... Heck I may even rename it to TonyFirshmanOS (Just because he's cool ;-) hehe) *DISCLAIMER: No relation exists between Tony Firshman and freeQDOS... that was just a joke*
