A few weeks ago I used the sentence "Membership of Quanta ... is by subscription to the group's monthly newsletter."

John Mason kindly corrected me and pointed out that is not currently the case, indeed it's not even mentioned in the constitution, so I assumed I made a mistake or mixed up with another group I was a member of at the time. Then Tony Firshman popped up to say he remembered it from somewhere or seen mention of it on the net somewhere.

In fact, the sentence was inside the front cover of Quanta newsletters up to and including March 1997 and coincidentally editorials at that time were being written by none other than John Mason (current Chairman) and Roy Brereton (current editor), which has reminded me how long these guys have loyally served Quanta! As the change happened at about the time of the AGM it might be that membership was changed at that point, or that it was just a turn of phrase and was altered just to bring everything into line.

Although it was never important (just trivia as far as I was concerned), this has been bugging me since it came up, so I'm really glad I've found where that sentence came from at last!

Just on a point of interest: the first newsletter was published before the QL was released and the first issue included the first proposed constitution which is not too different to today's, certainly similar in terms of the broad message. So Quanta really is older than the QL in the sense that you'd have got your hands on a Quanta newsletter before getting your hands on a QL!

When QL2005 or QLis21 (whatever its final name) comes along this year, I hope someone will do a history of the QL and come up with a little history exhibition and some trivia like this for people to read and recollect! A couple of screens or display boards, about 10 minutes worth of reading would be really nice!
