As I see it, the problem isn't so much the actual coding in itself (you could do that, too). But this will have many implications/changes in many files of the source code. Forget one and you're toast. Identifying them all will be a major effort, unless you already know your way around very well - which isn't my case. Which is why this was only a question and not a suggestion.
