the Idea I recall was to reduce the foil trace resistance and the tie-in 
points were also effectively
shortening the total path the 5V took to get to the farther point it 
anchored to
( this is off the top of the brains long term memory that is not burned 
out yet )
seems I recall it took a path that was over 12" to a path that was maybe 
only 7"-8"
and because the capacity of the wire exceeded the trace it was deemed 
beneficial.
