Without intending to advertise too much, you don't have to resort to
"free" space providers like Lycos these days.

For my webspace I use a company called Freeola. They offer the usual
0845 local rate dialup and give you email and as much free web space
as you require subject only to the usual restrictions that anything
you store is visible to other web users (i.e. it's a public page not
your own personal online storage space). They don't oblige me to put
adverts etc on there, but i've been so impressed with their service
(simple but fantastic is how i'd describe it) I voluntarily put a
little "free webspace provided by Freeola" line on the home page. You
get "unlimited" webspace - "unlimited" is defined, but as long as it's
all "visible" (i.e. a page or download links etc etc) we QLers are
very unlikely to run out of space.

The only thing with ISPs like Freeola is that you have to use their
dialup (or their broadband) to upload your pages (they have to make
money somehow), whereas webspace providers like Lycos generally let
you upload from an ISP of your choice with any FTP software. I don't
mind this because they are a reliable ISP who provide a good service.
I don't know if they spam filter or not, but I seem to get very little
spam from the freeola (UK6 DOT NET) addresses.
