In the old days one could run into compatibility problems between 
disc and drine.
Some drives can impart a greater charge to the disc and or require a 
stronger magnetic charge from the disc. Similarly the disc may 
require a more energetic write and/or give off a lesser signal.

40/80 track drives need care, a 40 track format with an 80t drive 
makes an unsound track, in two parts with a gap between.
