Tut tut, by the 80s we had pretty good surface mount ;) You need to crack open an Enterprise 64/128 someday! (I did work experience in 1990 at one of the scottish Fabrication/assembly plants for PCBs; we were using some very sophisticated surface-mount stuff then even on simple boards like a delay timer for a Nissan interior light). But what leads me to think late 80s, other than the laptop in question being an 8086 jobbie, is what looks like a date code of 8852 on one of the ICs, the SC11006CV...
