Yes, I remember this program and thinking it was a good idea, but was
not too sure how it could be used, except possibly in a graphics and
text adventure where the bottom part of the screen was always used just
for text (as per the Hobbit on the Spectrum)
I don't remember anything in the Adventure Creation Tool (by Steve
Sutton), but alas no longer have a copy of this - although it must be in
the Digital Precision collection somewhere.
The biggest shame with the QL world, is that although we are good at
devising new methods of doing things, there has never been much interest
in writing high quality games (or the authors apart from the odd one or
two in the very early days - Janko Mrsic Flogel and Damon Chaplin
mainly). My guess is that if they had had access to these type of
utilities, then we would have seen much better games. Even Phoebus
Dokos offered much ( see QWord for example), but alas, he is no longer
actively involved.
I wonder where these authors are now ...........................
I do wonder how we could instil some impetus into the QL market - even
the ZX81 and Spectrum see numerous new games released on a regular
basis, stretching the hardware using the latest techniques.

Hi Geoff, I'm not at home today so can't mail to the list from this email
address, so here's the info and I'll ask you politely - I am on Quanta
committee now ;o) - if you would mind forwarding it to the list. Despite
your picture of me in Toady, you will note I have never asked the Supreme
Toady (as Per Witte used to refer to QL Today editor in my time) to kneel
before me... ;-))
It's on disk UG02 and it's called splitmode by someone called
C.Stretch. It
allows switching between mode 4 and 8 part way down the screen. It
includes
a short piece of assembler source showing how it was done, basically,
relying on switching a hardware register at the right time using
interrupts,
so it would not work on emulators for example, and may well be speed
dependent, so might need tweaking for Gold Card etc.

I remember, that Steve Sutton also implemented a way of mixing Mode 4 &
>Mode 8 in his adventure creation program from DP (have forgotten the
name....). Must have been in the late 80s.
I have a vague memory that there is a demonstration program in the
Quanta
library that does something similar, but I have just done a quick look
through the library guide and cannot find it.
Does this jog anyone's memory?
Best wishes,
Geoff
